Inorganic pyrophosphatase (PPase) is an enzyme encoded by yeast DNA and expressed in recombinant E. coli. It catalyzes the hydrolysis of inorganic pyrophosphate into orthophosphate:

P₂O₇⁴⁻ + H₂O → 2 HPO₄²⁻

Under natural conditions, inorganic pyrophosphatase provides the thermodynamic driving force for the biosynthesis of proteins, DNA, and RNA. It also plays a role in biotransformation processes such as lipid metabolism, calcium absorption, and bone formation. In nucleic acid amplification tests, this product hydrolyzes the inorganic pyrophosphate generated during the reaction, thereby preventing its inhibitory effect on the reaction and shifting the reaction equilibrium toward product formation.
